***Big Tree*** is a 1946 [children's novel](/source/Children's_novel) written and illustrated by [Mary and Conrad Buff](/source/Mary_and_Conrad_Buff). Written from the perspective of [Wawona](/source/Wawona_Tree), a [personified](/source/Personified) [giant sequoia](/source/Sequoiadendron_giganteum), the tree tells its life story spanning 5,000 years.[1] The novel was a [Newbery Honor](/source/Newbery_Medal) recipient in 1947, the first of the authors' three Honors ([1952](/source/The_Apple_and_the_Arrow) and [1954](/source/Magic_Maize)).[2]
