As the name suggests it is situated beside a large, unspoiled beach. [Longa Island](/source/Longa_Island), a small uninhabited island, is easily visible.

The crofting village of [North Erradale](/source/North_Erradale) lies {{convert|1|mi|km|abbr=off}} northwest of Big Sand, along the coast road, with the village of [Melvaig](/source/Melvaig) located {{convert|4|to|5|mi|km|0|abbr=off}} further north of North Erradale.
