***Big Bambu*** is the second album by [Cheech & Chong](/source/Cheech_%26_Chong), released in [1972](/source/1972_in_music). The name *Big Bambu* is a reference to the actual [Bambu](/source/Bambu_(rolling_papers)) brand of [rolling paper](/source/Rolling_paper). The original [LP](/source/Vinyl_record) concept and album package was approved by the producer [Lou Adler](/source/Lou_Adler) and designed by [Ron Larson](/source/Ron_Larson) and manufactured by Sound Packaging Corp. to look like a giant rolling paper package, and contained a giant rolling paper with the record. Vinyl copies with the rolling paper have become collectible and hard to find. The original [CD](/source/Compact_Disc) packaging has been slightly reformatted, and does not contain rolling papers.

In generally positive review published in *[Rolling Stone](/source/Rolling_Stone_(magazine))*, [Janet Maslin](/source/Janet_Maslin) singled out the duo's voice work for particular praise. "The thing Cheech and Chong are great with is voices. Each has terrific ears for dialect, anything from spare change wino to jiveass soul, and there are at least 20 distinct personae showing up here, all of them cleverly done."[2]

The album was nominated for [Best Comedy Recording](/source/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Comedy_Album) at the [15th Grammy Awards](/source/15th_Grammy_Awards), but lost to [George Carlin's](/source/George_Carlin's) *[FM & AM](/source/FM_%26_AM)*.[3]

The album was #10 for 3 weeks in [Canada](/source/RPM_(magazine)), and was on the charts for 39 weeks.[4]
