# Beverly Peer

**Beverly Peer** (October 7, 1912 – January 16, 1997) was an American [jazz](/source/Jazz) [double-bassist](/source/Double-bass).[1]

Peer played piano professionally early in his career before switching to bass. He worked with [Chick Webb](/source/Chick_Webb) from 1936 to 1939 and continued to play in the orchestra under the direction of [Ella Fitzgerald](/source/Ella_Fitzgerald). In 1942 he joined [Sabby Lewis](/source/Sabby_Lewis)'s orchestra. He also worked extensively as an accompanist for vocalists such as [Sarah Vaughan](/source/Sarah_Vaughan), [Lena Horne](/source/Lena_Horne), [Johnny Mathis](/source/Johnny_Mathis), and [Barbra Streisand](/source/Barbra_Streisand). In the 1950s and 1960s he worked with pianists [Barbara Carroll](/source/Barbara_Carroll) and [Ellis Larkins](/source/Ellis_Larkins), and worked with [Bobby Short](/source/Bobby_Short) from the 1970s into the 1990s, often performing at the [Cafe Carlyle](/source/Cafe_Carlyle) in [New York City](/source/New_York_City).

He can be heard on [Ella Fitzgerald](/source/Ella_Fitzgerald)'s release "Ella Sings, Chick Swings" as well as other recordings of Ella and the Chick Webb Orchestra.

Aside from music, late in his career Peer also had [cameo](/source/Cameo_appearance) roles in films such as *[Hannah and Her Sisters](/source/Hannah_and_Her_Sisters)* and *[For Love or Money](/source/For_Love_or_Money_(1993_film))*.
