# Bethlen

The **House of Bethlen** is the name of two Hungarian ancient noble families, *Bethlen de Iktár* and *Bethlen de Bethlen*. Although both families have similar coat of arms, they have no proven mutual ancestry. Both can trace their noble lineage up to the 12th and 13th centuries, and their family members played a significant role in the history of [Transylvania](/source/Principality_of_Transylvania_(1570%E2%80%931711)) and [Hungary within the Habsburg Empire](/source/Austria-Hungary).

*Bethlen* is the Hungarian and adopted German name of two places in Transylvania, Romania, which are both called *Beclean* in Romanian: the town of [Beclean](/source/Beclean) in [Bistrița-Năsăud County](/source/Bistri%C8%9Ba-N%C4%83s%C4%83ud_County), and the [commune](/source/Communes_of_Romania) of [Beclean](/source/Beclean,_Bra%C5%9Fov) (German: *Bethlen or Badlinen*, Hungarian: *Bethlen*), in [Brașov County](/source/Bra%C8%99ov_County).
