American statistics educator

**Beth L. Chance** (born 1968)[1] is an American [statistics educator](/source/Statistics_education). She is a professor of statistics at the [California Polytechnic State University](/source/California_Polytechnic_State_University).[2]

## Education and career

Chance is originally from [San Diego, California](/source/San_Diego%2C_California).[3] She graduated from [Harvey Mudd College](/source/Harvey_Mudd_College) in 1990, majoring in [mathematics](/source/Mathematics) with a minor in psychology. She completed a Ph.D. in [operations research](/source/Operations_research), concentrating in statistics, at [Cornell University](/source/Cornell_University) in 1994. Her dissertation, *Behavior Characterization and Estimation for General Hierarchical Multivariate Linear Regression Models*, was supervised by Martin Wells.[4]

She was a faculty member at the [University of the Pacific](/source/University_of_the_Pacific_(United_States)) from 1994 until 1999, when she moved to the California Polytechnic State University.[4] She was chair of the [American Statistical Association](/source/American_Statistical_Association) Section on Statistics and [Data Science](/source/Data_science) Education for 2018.[3]

## Recognition

In 2002, Chance became the inaugural recipient of the Waller Education Award of the [American Statistical Association](/source/American_Statistical_Association) Section on Statistics and Data Science Education.[8] In 2003, she won the [Mu Sigma Rho](/source/Mu_Sigma_Rho) Statistics Education Award.[9][10]

She became a [Fellow of the American Statistical Association](/source/Fellow_of_the_American_Statistical_Association) in 2005.[3] She is also an Elected Member of the [International Statistical Institute](/source/International_Statistical_Institute).[11]
