He was [ordained](/source/ordination) fourth [bishop of Rheims](/source/bishop_of_Rheims) by [Pope Miltiades](/source/Pope_Miltiades) in 312AD and attended the [Council of Arles of 314](/source/Council_of_Arles_(314)) with his deacon, Primogenite. By 314AD, Betause had built a new [cathedral](/source/cathedral) because until then, the Christians in [Reims](/source/Reims) had only a small building and a cemetery outside the city. The new church was dedicated to the [Holy Apostles](/source/Holy_Apostles).

He asked [Pope Sylvester I](/source/Pope_Sylvester_I) to transfer the seat of the [bishopric](/source/bishopric) to [Reims](/source/Reims) which was moved under [Saint Nicaise](/source/Nicasius_of_Rheims).
