Pioneering paediatrician

Beryl Corner

**Beryl Dorothy Corner** [OBE](/source/Order_of_the_British_Empire) (1910–2007) was a medical doctor and committed Christian[1] who specialised in the [care and treatment of children](/source/Paediatrics) and pioneered [neonatology](/source/Neonatology) – care of the [newborn](/source/Newborn).

She excelled as a medical student at the [London School of Medicine for Women](/source/London_School_of_Medicine_for_Women) but then had trouble finding a post at institutions like [Great Ormond Street Hospital](/source/Great_Ormond_Street_Hospital) because she was a woman. She established a career at the [Bristol Royal Hospital for Children](/source/Bristol_Royal_Hospital_for_Children) and, for several years, she was the only paediatrician in [South West England](/source/South_West_England). She was admitted to the [British Paediatric Association](/source/British_Paediatric_Association) in 1945.[2] Corner established a unit to care for newborn babies. With a budget of £100 she was able to halve mortality rates.[3] In 1948 she was the consultant paediatrician who oversaw the first caesarian birth of four quads born at Bristol.[4]

Corner was awarded the [Order of the British Empire](/source/Order_of_the_British_Empire) shortly before she died in 2007, aged 96.[2]
