# Bertya

***Bertya*** is a genus of flowering plants in the [family](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) [Euphorbiaceae](/source/Euphorbiaceae) [endemic](/source/Endemic) to Australia. Plants in the genus *Bertya* are shrubs, usually [monoecious](/source/Monoecious), with [simple leaves](/source/Leaf#Divisions_of_the_blade), flowers arranged singly in leaf axils, male flowers with many [stamens](/source/Stamen), female flowers usually smaller and narrower than male flowers, and the fruit a [capsule](/source/Capsule_(fruit)) containing a single seed.

## Description

Plants in the genus *Bertya* are usually monoecious, often sticky shrubs, either [glabrous](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/glabrous) or covered with woolly, star-shaped hairs. The leaves are usually arranged alternately, simple, [sessile](/source/Sessility_(botany)) or on a short [petiole](/source/Petiole_(botany)), flat or with the ends curved downwards, and lack [stipules](/source/Stipule). The flowers are sessile or on a short [pedicel](/source/Pedicel_(botany)), usually singly, or in [umbel](/source/Umbel)-like clusters on a [peduncle](/source/Peduncle_(botany)) in leaf axils. Male flowers usually have no petals, but many stamens with their bases fused, and no [styles](/source/Style_(botany)). Female flowers are small and narrower, have no petals, the [ovary](/source/Ovary_(botany)) usually with three [locules](/source/Locule) and three styles fused at the base. The fruit is a capsule, usually containing a single oval, elliptic or oblong seed with a creamy-white to yellowish [caruncle](/source/Elaiosome).[2][3][4][5]

## Taxonomy

The genus *Bertya* was first described in 1845 by [Jules Émile Planchon](/source/Jules_%C3%89mile_Planchon) in [William Jackson Hooker](/source/William_Jackson_Hooker)'s *London Journal of Botany*.[6][7] The name of the genus (*Bertya*) honours the French botanist and horticulturist Count [Léonce de Lambertye](/source/L%C3%A9once_de_Lambertye).[2]
