**Bertha Crowther**, née **Bertha Piggott**, (9 December 1921 – 8 August 2007) was a British athlete[1] who competed at the [1948 Summer Olympics](/source/1948_Summer_Olympics).[2][3]

## Biography

Crowther became the [national 80 metres hurdles champion](/source/List_of_British_champions_in_sprint_hurdles) after winning the British [WAAA Championships](/source/WAAA_Championships) title at the [1946 WAAA Championships](/source/1946_WAAA_Championships). She also finished third behind [Dora Gardner](/source/Dora_Gardner) in the high jump event.[4][5][6]

Crowther finished second behind [Dorothy Tyler](/source/Dorothy_Tyler) in the high jump event and third behind [Maureen Gardner](/source/Maureen_Gardner) in the 80 metres hurdles event at the [1948 WAAA Championships](/source/1948_WAAA_Championships).[7][8]

Shortly afterwards, representing [Great Britain](/source/Great_Britain_at_the_1948_Summer_Olympics) at the 1948 Olympic Games in London, she competed in the [women's 80 metres hurdles](/source/Athletics_at_the_1948_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Women's_80_metres_hurdles) competition.[9]

Crowther showcased her all round ability by becoming the inaugural [national pentathlon champion](/source/List_of_British_champions_in_decathlon%2Fheptathlon) at the [1949 WAAA Championships](/source/1949_WAAA_Championships).[10][11] She successfully retained her title the following year at the [1950 WAAA Championships](/source/1950_WAAA_Championships).[12]

She represented [England](/source/England_at_the_1950_British_Empire_Games) and won a silver medal in the high jump at the [1950 British Empire Games](/source/1950_British_Empire_Games) in [Auckland](/source/Auckland), New Zealand. She also competed in the javelin, long jump and 80 metres hurdles.[13][14]
