Pratten was born in Sydney on 22 April 1892.<ref name="CAP" /> His father [Herbert Edward Pratten](/source/Herbert_Pratten) was a jam manufacturer who was later elected to federal parliament and served as a cabinet minister.<ref>{{cite news|url=https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/20754290|title=H. Pratten made his first-class debut for New South Wales against [Queensland](/source/Queensland_Bulls) in November 1913,<ref name="FCM">[http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Players/6/6065/First-Class_Matches.html First-class matches played by Bert Pratten] at CricketArchive</ref> also playing a minor match against Ipswich and West Moreton the same month.<ref name="OthM">[http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Players/6/6065/Other_matches.html Other matches played by Bert Pratten] at CricketArchive</ref>

In 1914, after another first-class match against Queensland<ref name="FCM" /> and a minor match against Toowoomba,<ref name="OthM" /> Pratten played his first [Sheffield Shield](/source/Pura_Cup) match against [South Australia](/source/Southern_Redbacks) in December. He also played against [Victoria](/source/Victorian_Bushrangers) that month before playing his final first-class match against South Australia in January 1915.<ref name="FCM" /> He played a match for the [Federated Malay States](/source/Federated_Malay_States_cricket_team) against the [Straits Settlements](/source/Straits_Settlements_cricket_team) in 1919<ref name="OthM" /> and died in [Neutral Bay](/source/Neutral_Bay) on 11 September 1979.<ref name="CAP" />
