The '''Berounka''' ({{IPA|cs|bɛrɔʊ̯ŋka|audio=Cs-Berounka.ogg}}) is a [river](/source/river) in the [Czech Republic](/source/Czech_Republic), a left [tributary](/source/tributary) of the [Vltava](/source/Vltava) River. It flows through the [Plzeň](/source/Plze%C5%88_Region) and [Central Bohemian](/source/Central_Bohemian_Region) regions to [Prague](/source/Prague). It is formed by the confluence of the [Mže](/source/M%C5%BEe) and [Radbuza](/source/Radbuza) rivers in [Plzeň](/source/Plze%C5%88). Together with the Mže, which is its main source, the Berounka is {{convert|244.6|km|abbr=on}} long, which makes it the [fifth longest river in the Czech Republic](/source/List_of_rivers_of_the_Czech_Republic). Without the Mže, it is {{convert|139.4|km|abbr=on}} long.

==Etymology==
The river is named after the town of [Beroun](/source/Beroun). Originally, the entire stream was called [Mže](/source/M%C5%BEe) ({{langx|de|Mies}}) and the name first appeared in the 12th century, among others in ''[Chronica Boemorum](/source/Chronica_Boemorum)''. The name was written as ''Mse'', ''Msa'' and ''Misa''. From the 17th century, the lower course started to be named Berounka, but the name Mže still appeared as a name for the entire stream at the end of the 19th century. In order to avoid confusion, an initiative to rename the lower course back to the historical name Mže was created in 2008, but its efforts were unsuccessful due to the strongly adopted current name.<ref>{{cite web |title=Bude se Berounka jmenovat Mže?|url=https://www.idnes.cz/cestovani/po-cesku/bude-se-berounka-jmenovat-mze.A081009_160558_igcechy_tom|work=iDNES.cz|language=cs|date=2008-10-19|access-date=2023-09-29}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |title=Mže vs. Berounka|url=https://www.radnicko.cz/turista/cestovni-ruch/vodacka-sekce/reka-berounka/mze-vs-berounka/|publisher=Mikroregion Radnicko|language=cs|access-date=2023-09-29}}</ref>

==Characteristic==
[[File:Berounka - jez roztoky.jpg|thumb|The Berounka in [Roztoky](/source/Roztoky_(Rakovn%C3%ADk_District))]]
From a water management point of view, the Berounka and Mže are two different rivers with separate numbering of [river kilometres](/source/River_mile). In a broader point of view, the Berounka (as Mže) originates in the territory of [Mähring](/source/M%C3%A4hring) in the [Upper Palatine Forest](/source/Upper_Palatine_Forest) at an elevation of {{cvt|726|m}} and flows to [Prague](/source/Prague)-[Lahovice](/source/Lahovice), where it enters the Vltava River at an elevation of {{cvt|189|m}}. It is {{convert|244.57|km|abbr=on}} long, of which {{convert|2.34|km|abbr=on}} is in Germany.{{GeoQuelle|DE-BY|GV}} In the Czech Republic, it is {{convert|242.23|km|abbr=on}} long, which makes it the [fifth longest river in the country](/source/List_of_rivers_of_the_Czech_Republic). Its [drainage basin](/source/drainage_basin) has an area of {{convert|8854.2|km2|abbr=on}}. The name Berounka is used from the confluence of the Mže with the [Radbuza](/source/Radbuza) in [Plzeň](/source/Plze%C5%88) and from this point to the confluence with the Vltava, the river is {{convert|139.4|km|abbr=on}} long.<ref name=dibavod>{{cite web |title=Základní charakteristiky toku Berounka a jeho povodí|url=http://www.dibavod.cz/download.php?id_souboru=2306|publisher=T. ==Settlements==
[[File:Výhled z Hladké skály (01).jpg|thumb|The Berounka in [Černošice](/source/%C4%8Cerno%C5%A1ice)]]
There are several large settlements on the river. The Mže flows through [Tachov](/source/Tachov) and [Stříbro](/source/St%C5%99%C3%ADbro). After its confluence with the Radbuza in [Plzeň](/source/Plze%C5%88), the Berounka flows through [Beroun](/source/Beroun), [Řevnice](/source/%C5%98evnice), [Dobřichovice](/source/Dob%C5%99ichovice), [Černošice](/source/%C4%8Cerno%C5%A1ice) and along the edge of [Prague](/source/Prague).

==Bodies of water==
There are 7,502 bodies of water in the basin area; the largest of them is the [Hracholusky Reservoir](/source/Hracholusky_Reservoir) with an area of {{cvt|352|ha}}, built at the confluence of the Mže and the stream Úterský potok. There are no bodies of water built directly on the lower course of the Berounka.<ref name=dibavod/>

==Fauna==
The river is home to the mollusc ''[Unio pictorum](/source/Unio_pictorum)'', which is critically endangered within the Czech Republic. The endemic species ''[Bulgarica nitidosa](/source/Bulgarica_nitidosa)'' lives by the river.<ref>{{cite web |title=Živočichové|url=https://ceskykras.nature.cz/zivocichove|work=CHKO Český kras|publisher=Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic|language=cs|access-date=2023-09-29}}</ref>

==Use==
There is an artificial slalom course in [Roztoky](/source/Roztoky_(Rakovn%C3%ADk_District)), on the 63rd river km.<ref>{{cite web |title=USD Roztoky u Křivoklátu|url=https://www.kanoe.cz/sporty/slalom?view=article&id=167&catid=27|publisher=Kanoe.cz|language=cs|access-date=2025-09-29}}</ref>

==Tourism==
The Berounka is considered one of the most beautiful rivers in the country and is among the most popular rivers for [river tourism](/source/nautical_tourism). Almost its entire flow from Plzeň is navigable. It is popular thanks to the sections in the protected landscape areas of [Křivoklátsko](/source/K%C5%99ivokl%C3%A1tsko_Protected_Landscape_Area) and Český kras, which lead through unspoiled nature. The Berounka belongs to the undemanding rivers suitable for beginner paddlers. An 82 km long educational trail for paddlers runs along the river.<ref>{{cite web |title=Berounka – řeka, kterou proslavil spisovatel a vášnivý rybář Ota Pavel|url=https://www.kudyznudy.cz/aktivity/berounka-reka-kterou-proslavil-spisovatel-a-vas|publisher=CzechTourism|language=cs|access-date=2023-09-29}}</ref>
