# Bernhard Weiss

**Bernhard Weiss** (20 June 1827 – 14 January 1918) was a German [Protestant](/source/Protestant) [New Testament](/source/New_Testament) scholar. He was the father of [Johannes Weiss](/source/Johannes_Weiss) and the painter, [Hedwig Weiss](/source/Hedwig_Wei%C3%9F).

## Biography

Weiss was born at [Königsberg](/source/K%C3%B6nigsberg). After studying [theology](/source/Theology) at the [University of Königsberg](/source/University_of_K%C3%B6nigsberg) (Albertina), [Halle](/source/University_of_Halle) and [Berlin](/source/University_of_Berlin), he became professor extraordinarius at Königsberg in 1852, and afterwards professor ordinarius at [Kiel](/source/Kiel) and Berlin. In 1880 he was made superior [consistorial](/source/Consistory_(Protestantism)) councillor of the [Evangelical State Church of Prussia's older Provinces](/source/Evangelical_State_Church_of_Prussia's_older_Provinces).[1]

## Literary production

An opponent of the [Tübingen School](/source/T%C3%BCbingen_School), he published a number of important works, which became well known to students in Great Britain and America.[1] He was also the reviser of commentaries on the [New Testament](/source/New_Testament) in the series of [H.A.W. Meyer](/source/Heinrich_August_Wilhelm_Meyer): he wrote the commentaries on [Matthew](/source/Book_of_Matthew) (the 9th ed., 1897), [Mark](/source/Book_of_Mark) and [Luke](/source/Book_of_Luke) (the 9th ed., 1901), [John](/source/Book_of_John) (the 9th ed., 1902), [Romans](/source/Epistle_to_the_Romans) (the 9th ed., 1899), the Epistles to [Timothy](/source/First_Epistle_to_Timothy) and [Titus](/source/Epistle_to_Titus) (the 7th ed., 1902), [Hebrews](/source/Book_of_Hebrews) (the 6th ed., 1897), and the [Epistles of John](/source/Epistles_of_John) (the 6th ed., 1900).

Weiss also established a new text of the Greek [New Testament](/source/New_Testament), which was utilized by [Eberhard Nestle](/source/Eberhard_Nestle) for his [Novum Testamentum Graece](/source/Novum_Testamentum_Graece).
