**Bernard Yago** (July 1916 – 5 October 1997) was an [Ivorian Catholic](/source/Catholic_Church_in_Ivory_Coast) prelate who served as [Archbishop of Abidjan](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Abidjan) from 1960 to 1994.[1] He was made a [cardinal](/source/Cardinal_(Catholic_Church)) in 1983.

## Biography

Bernard Yago was born in [Pass](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pass,_Ivory_Coast&action=edit&redlink=1), [Yopougon](/source/Yopougon), and studied at the [seminary](/source/Seminary) in [Abidjan](/source/Abidjan) before being [ordained](/source/Holy_Orders) to the [priesthood](/source/Priesthood_(Catholic_Church)) on 1 May 1947, the second African priest to do so after [Rene Kouassi](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rene_Kouassi&action=edit&redlink=1).[2] He then served as a [professor](/source/Professor) at the [Minor Seminary](/source/Minor_seminary) of [Bingerville](/source/Bingerville) and as director of the Pre-[Seminary](/source/Seminary) École de Petit Clerics until 1956, whence he began [pastoral](/source/Parish_(Catholic_Church)) work in Abidjan until 1957. Yago furthered his studies at the [Catholic Institute of](/source/Institut_Catholique_de_Paris) [Paris](/source/Paris) from 1957 to 1959. Upon his return to [Côte d'Ivoire](/source/C%C3%B4te_d'Ivoire), he was Counselor of [Catholic Action](/source/Catholic_Action) in Abidjan from until 1960.

On 5 April 1960, Yago was appointed [Archbishop of Abidjan](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Abidjan) by [Pope John XXIII](/source/Pope_John_XXIII). He received his [episcopal consecration](/source/Bishop_(Catholic_Church)) on the following 8 May from Pope John himself, with Bishops Napoléon-Alexandre Labrie, [CIM](/source/Eudists) and [Fulton John Sheen](/source/Fulton_J._Sheen) serving as [co-consecrators](/source/Consecrator), in [St. Peter's Basilica](/source/St._Peter's_Basilica). Yago attended the [Second Vatican Council](/source/Second_Vatican_Council) from 1962 to 1965, and sat on the Council's [Central Preparatory Commission](/source/Central_Preparatory_Commission).

[Pope John Paul II](/source/Pope_John_Paul_II) made him [Cardinal-Priest](/source/Cardinal_(Catholicism)) of [San Crisogono](/source/San_Crisogono) in the [consistory](/source/Papal_consistory) of 2 February 1983.[3] Yago, who was the first cardinal from Côte d'Ivoire, resigned his post as Archbishop on 19 December 1994, after 34 years. He lost the right to participate in a [papal conclave](/source/Papal_conclave) upon reaching the age of eighty in July 1996.

Cardinal Yago died in Abidjan at age 81.[3] He is buried in the [metropolitan](/source/Metropolitan_bishop) [cathedral](/source/Cathedral) of Abidjan.

## Legacy

Yago was one of the only clergy in Côte d'Ivoire who openly opposed the construction of the gargantuan [basilica](/source/Basilica_of_Our_Lady_of_Peace), modeled on [St. Peter's Basilica](/source/St._Peter's_Basilica) in Vatican City, built by the former president [Félix Houphouët-Boigny](/source/F%C3%A9lix_Houphou%C3%ABt-Boigny) in his home village of [Yamoussoukro](/source/Yamoussoukro) because of the enormous waste of hundreds of millions of dollars, and attempted to persuade Pope John Paul II from consecrating it during his visit to the country.[4]
