==Military career==

Vincent was a protégé of [Ian Hamilton](/source/Ian_Hamilton_(British_Army_officer)), also an observer in the Russo-Japanese War, and who Vincent had served as an assistant military secretary in October 1905.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=27842|page=6706|date=6 October 1905}}</ref> Vincent attended the [Staff College, Camberley](/source/Staff_College%2C_Camberley). The then commandant of the college, [Henry Wilson](/source/Sir_Henry_Wilson%2C_1st_Baronet), was sceptical of Berkeley's claims that Japanese morale had enabled their infantry to overcome Russian defensive firepower.<ref>Jeffery 2006, p82-3</ref> He was promoted to [major](/source/Major_(rank)) in the [6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons](/source/6th_(Inniskilling)_Dragoons) in 1908.<ref name=times/>

In January 1910 he was appointed as a professor at the Staff College.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=28385|page=4264|date=17 June 1910}}</ref> In 1911, when Vincent learned that he was to leave his job, and was shown General Haig's critical report on him, he availed himself of his right to Appeal to the King, under Section 42 of the Army Act, claiming unfair dismissal.<ref>Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives at King's College London, Hamilton 5/1/10 and Capper 2/4/17</ref>

He served in [World War I](/source/World_War_I), initially as a general staff officer with the [Indian Corps](/source/Indian_Corps). In April 1915 he was promoted to temporary lieutenant colonel and was appointed as general staff officer, grade 1, essentially [chief of staff](/source/chief_of_staff), of the [37th Division](/source/37th_Division_(United_Kingdom)), a [Kitchener's Army](/source/Kitchener's_Army) formation.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=29139|page=3932|date=20 April 1915|supp=y}}</ref><ref name=times/> Appointed a [Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George](/source/Companion_of_the_Order_of_St_Michael_and_St_George) in 1916, he took part in the [Battle of the Somme](/source/Battle_of_the_Somme) and the [Battle of Ancre](/source/Battle_of_Ancre).<ref name=times/> Promoted in January 1917 to brevet lieutenant colonel,<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=29886|page=18|date=29 December 1916|supp=y}}</ref> and soon after to temporary [brigadier general](/source/Brigadier_(United_Kingdom)), he succeeded [Arthur Solly-Flood](/source/Arthur_Solly-Flood) as commander of the [12th (Eastern) Division](/source/12th_(Eastern)_Division)'s [35th Infantry Brigade](/source/35th_Brigade_(United_Kingdom)).<ref name=times/><ref>{{London Gazette|issue=29986|page=2635|date=16 March 1917}}</ref> He took part in the [Battle of Arras](/source/Battle_of_Arras_(1917)) in April, when he was buried alive, and the subsequent retreat, when he was gassed.<ref name=times/> He also took part in the attack on the [Hindenburg Line](/source/Hindenburg_Line).<ref name=times/>

After the war, he became commanding officer of the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons.<ref name=times/> He went on to be commander of the British Forces in [Iraq](/source/Iraq) in 1922 and retired from the army in 1924.<ref name=times/>
