'''Bennebroek''' ({{IPA|nl|ˈbɛnəbruk|-|Nl-Bennebroek.ogg}}) is a village and former municipality in the northwest [Netherlands](/source/Netherlands), now part of [Bloemendaal](/source/Bloemendaal), [North Holland](/source/North_Holland). Before its merger in 2009, it was the smallest municipality in the Netherlands, covering an area of only 1.75 km².

==History==

Bennebroek was probably formed in the 13th century and its development was closely linked to the peat harvesting industry.<ref name="GBH">{{cite web |title=Gemeente Bennebroek History |url=http://www.bennebroek.nl/smartsite.dws?id=1804&ct=1 |accessdate=2007-12-11 |language=Dutch |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20070703053851/http://www.bennebroek.nl/smartsite.dws?id=1804&ct=1 |archivedate=2007-07-03 |url-status=dead }}</ref>

On 28 May 1653, Bennebroek split off from the [Heemstede](/source/Heemstede) fiefdom and Adriaen Pauw, son of [Adriaan Pauw](/source/Adriaan_Pauw), became its first feudal lord.<ref>{{cite web |title=Gemeente Bennebroek Coat of Arms |url=http://www.bennebroek.nl/smartsite.dws?id=1805&ct=1 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20040929135749/http://www.bennebroek.nl/smartsite.dws?id=1805&ct=1 |url-status=dead |archive-date=2004-09-29 |accessdate=2007-12-11 |language=Dutch }}</ref> Its population was dependent on animal husbandry and transportation. Later bulb flower cultivation became an important business. Since the second half of the 20th century, Bennebroek has primarily been a commuter community for the surrounding cities.<ref name="GBH" />

On 29 March 2007, the municipal councils of Bennebroek and [Bloemendaal](/source/Bloemendaal) agreed to merge into one municipality, which took place on 1 January 2009.

=== Local government ===
The last municipal council of Bennebroek before its merger consisted of 11 seats, which at the [2006 elections](/source/2006_Dutch_municipal_elections) were divided as follows:<ref>{{Cite web |date=7 March 2006 |title=Bennebroek municipal election 2014 |url=https://www.verkiezingsuitslagen.nl/verkiezingen/detail/GR20060307/629021 |access-date=14 June 2024 |website=verkiezingsuitslagen.nl|language=nl}}</ref>
