# Benjamin Wood (MP)

**Benjamin Wood** (1787 – 13 August 1845)[1] was a [British](/source/Great_Britain) [Whig](/source/Whigs_(British_political_party)) politician.[2][3][4] He was [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(United_Kingdom)) for [Southwark](/source/Southwark_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) from 24 January 1840 until his death in 1845

## Life

Benjamin Wood was born in [Tiverton, Devon](/source/Tiverton,_Devon), the son of William Wood (died 1809), a [serge](/source/Serge_(fabric)) maker and a [Dissenter](/source/English_Dissenters). An older brother was [Sir Matthew Wood, 1st Baronet](/source/Sir_Matthew_Wood,_1st_Baronet) (1768 – 1843)[5] also a [Whig](/source/Whig_(British_political_party)) politician. Benjamin Wood was a partner with his brother in the [hops](/source/Hops)-trading business, Wood, Field & Wood.[5]

Wood twice stood unsuccessfully in the [Tiverton constituency](/source/Tiverton_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) as a Whig candidate. In both the [1832 general election](/source/1832_United_Kingdom_general_election) and the [1833 Tiverton by-election](/source/1833_Tiverton_by-election) he lost to [Radicals](/source/Radicals_(UK)). He stood in [Kingston upon Hull](/source/Kingston_upon_Hull_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) in [1837](/source/1837_United_Kingdom_general_election).

Wood was elected as the Whig MP for [Southwark](/source/Southwark_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) at the [by-election in 1840](/source/1840_Southwark_by-election) caused by the resignation of [Daniel Whittle Harvey](/source/Daniel_Whittle_Harvey). He held the seat until his death at Eltham Lodge in [Kent](/source/Kent) in 1845.[4][6]

He is buried in [Cressing](/source/Cressing) in [Essex](/source/Essex).[7]

## Family

In October 1815 in [Kenwyn](/source/Kenwyn) in Cornwall, he married Anna Maria Michell (1791–1889) daughter of Admiral [Sampson Michell](/source/Sampson_Michell) and sister of Admiral [Frederick Thomas Michell](/source/Frederick_Thomas_Michell) and [Charles Collier Michell](/source/Charles_Collier_Michell).[8]

A dispute about his widow's will was a possible factor in the divorce of [Katharine O'Shea](/source/Katharine_O'Shea) () and the downfall of [Charles Stewart Parnell](/source/Charles_Stewart_Parnell)
