**Benjamin Hough**[pronunciation?] (1773 – September 4, 1819) was the second [State Auditor](/source/Ohio_State_Auditor) of the [U.S. State](/source/U.S._State) of [Ohio](/source/Ohio) from 1808 to 1815. He also served in local political offices and in both houses of the [Ohio General Assembly](/source/Ohio_General_Assembly).

Hough was born in [Virginia](/source/Virginia).[1] He was in [Jefferson County](/source/Jefferson_County,_Ohio), [Northwest Territory](/source/Northwest_Territory) by 1802 when he surveyed [Cross Creek Township](/source/Cross_Creek_Township,_Ohio) into quarter [sections](/source/Section_(land)).[2] He was elected a county commissioner at the first election, April 2, 1804, after [Ohio](/source/Ohio) became a state.[3]

Hough represented Jefferson County in the [Ohio State Senate](/source/Ohio_State_Senate) 1805 to 1807,[4] and the [Ohio House of Representatives](/source/Ohio_House_of_Representatives) 1807 to 1808.[5] [Thomas Gibson](/source/Thomas_Gibson_(American_politician)) resigned as [Ohio State Auditor](/source/Ohio_State_Auditor) March 1, 1808.[6] The legislature had adjourned February 22, 1808, and would not meet again until December,[7] so [Governor](/source/Ohio_Governor) [Thomas Kirker](/source/Thomas_Kirker) appointed Hough as Auditor.

Hough was re-elected by the legislature December 18, 1809,[8] and again February 20, 1812,[9] serving until March 15, 1815.[6] He remained in the capital, [Chillicothe](/source/Chillicothe,_Ohio), after his term, and was elected again to the Ohio Senate, 1815 to 1816, from [Ross County](/source/Ross_County,_Ohio).[10] He was a [Democratic-Republican Party](/source/Democratic-Republican_Party) [Presidential elector](/source/Presidential_elector) in 1816 for [Monroe](/source/James_Monroe)/[Tompkins](/source/Daniel_D._Tompkins). [11]

Hough was married to Elizabeth Core on August 29, 1806, by Stephen Ford, justice of the Peace, in Jefferson County.[12] Hough died at Chillicothe, leaving his widow and children. He is buried at [Grandview Cemetery](/source/Grandview_Cemetery_(Chillicothe,_Ohio)).[13][14]
