**Benjamin Haughton** (1855–1932)[1] was an Irish businessman from [Cork](/source/Cork_(city)) city, who was an [independent](/source/Independent_politician_(Ireland)) member of [Seanad Éireann](/source/Seanad_%C3%89ireann_(Irish_Free_State)) from 1922 to 1928.[2] He was from the Cork branch of a [Quaker](/source/Quaker) family whose Carlow branch included social reformer [James Haughton](/source/James_Haughton_(reformer)) and scientist [Samuel Haughton](/source/Samuel_Haughton).[3][4] Benjamin was head of Haughton's timber and iron merchants in Cork and a supporter of the local [YMCA](/source/YMCA).[5][3]

During the [Irish War of Independence](/source/Irish_War_of_Independence) he was involved with the [Irish White Cross](/source/Irish_White_Cross) and among a group of liberal [Southern unionists](/source/Southern_Irish_unionism) who sought conciliation with [Sinn Féin](/source/Sinn_F%C3%A9in) in Cork in the lead-up to the 1921 truce.[6][5] Upon the coming into force of the [Constitution of the Irish Free State](/source/Constitution_of_the_Irish_Free_State) in 1922, [W. T. Cosgrave](/source/W._T._Cosgrave) as the [President of the Executive Council](/source/President_of_the_Executive_Council_of_the_Irish_Free_State) nominated 30 of the initial 60 senators, including Haughton.[7] These were subsequently divided by lottery into two cohorts of 15, serving terms of six and twelve years respectively, with Haughton drawing a six-year term.[8] He lost his seat at the 1928 Seanad election.[2]

He and his wife Margaret Elizabeth Goodbody had five children.[3]
