**Benis** (Persian: بنیس, bæˈniːs)[a] is a village in [Guney-ye Sharqi Rural District](/source/Guney-ye_Sharqi_Rural_District) of the [Central District](/source/Central_District_(Shabestar_County)) in [Shabestar County](/source/Shabestar_County), [East Azerbaijan](/source/East_Azerbaijan_province) province, [Iran](/source/Iran).

## Demographics

### Population

At the time of the 2006 National Census, the village's population was 1,422 in 455 households.[1] The following census in 2011 counted 1,008 people in 331 households.[2] The 2016 census measured the population of the village as 709 people in 296 households.[3]

## Structure and history

The layout of Benis is centralized; the village is surrounded by nearby mountains, which supply a stream that feeds into a local [aqueduct](/source/Aqueduct_(water_supply)). The aqueduct waters local gardens and greenery. There is a [mosque](/source/Mosque), [public bath](/source/Public_bath), and various shops located around the village square. A main asphalt road leads south out of the village into the rest of [Shabestar County](/source/Shabestar_County).

During the summer, the population of Benis increases significantly. [Agriculture](/source/Agriculture) has been a local industry in Benis for many years, and continues to grow. In the 19th century, most migrations from the village were to foreign cities such as [Istanbul](/source/Istanbul), [Baku](/source/Baku), and [Tbilisi](/source/Tbilisi). After the [Russian Revolution](/source/Russian_Revolution), more immigration took place from Benis across the country and into cities such as [Abadan](/source/Abadan), [Ahvaz](/source/Ahvaz) and [Tehran](/source/Tehran). Many workers are chiefly active in the businesses of [confectionery](/source/Confectionery) production and the processing of [paper](/source/Paper).
