**Benjamin Maurice Silverstone** (born 9 April 1979)[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] is an English [barrister](/source/Barrister) and former actor. Silverstone appeared in the 1998 [Paramount Classics](/source/Paramount_Classics) feature film, *[Get Real](/source/Get_Real_(film))*.[1]

## Early life and education

Silverstone was born in [Camden](/source/London_Borough_of_Camden), [London](/source/London), the son of Beverly and Anthony Silverstone. He has one sister and one brother. He studied English at [Trinity College, Cambridge](/source/Trinity_College%2C_Cambridge), and law (LLM) at the [London School of Economics](/source/London_School_of_Economics).

## Acting career

Prior to *[Get Real](/source/Get_Real_(film))*, Silverstone appeared in [Adrian Lyne](/source/Adrian_Lyne)'s adaptation of *[Lolita](/source/Lolita_(1997_film))* in 1997 and [Mike Figgis](/source/Mike_Figgis)' *[The Browning Version](/source/The_Browning_Version_(1994_film))* in 1994. *Get Real* was based on [Patrick Wilde](/source/Patrick_Wilde)'s stage play *[What's Wrong with Angry?](/source/What's_Wrong_with_Angry%3F)*, and is a love story between two British schoolboys. Silverstone made the front cover of *[Gay Times](/source/Gay_Times)* in May 1999 to mark the release of the film.

The film achieved cult status with many fans, and even gave rise to two fan-organised gatherings in the filming locations around [Basingstoke](/source/Basingstoke).[2] The events in themselves attracted the attention of the television media, as fans of the film travelled several thousand miles to the event.[3]

Immediately after the release of *Get Real*, Silverstone went to [Cambridge University](/source/University_of_Cambridge). While there, he acted in student productions of *[King Lear](/source/King_Lear)*, *The Whiteheaded Boy*, *[The Duchess of Malfi](/source/The_Duchess_of_Malfi)*, *[The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui](/source/The_Resistible_Rise_of_Arturo_Ui)*, *Near Miss* and *[The Winter's Tale](/source/The_Winter's_Tale)*. In his first term at Cambridge, Silverstone was initially cast as Lieutenant Yolland in the [ADC Theatre](/source/ADC_Theatre) production of the [Brian Friel](/source/Brian_Friel) play "Translations": however, he turned the part down, and was replaced with another Cambridge freshman, [Tom Hiddleston](/source/Tom_Hiddleston). His involvement in student theatre at Cambridge also overlapped with Oscar winner [Eddie Redmayne](/source/Eddie_Redmayne).

Since 2001, Silverstone has appeared in numerous stage productions such as *[The Tempest](/source/The_Tempest_(play))* and *[My Boy Jack](/source/My_Boy_Jack_(play))* and was nominated for both a *The Times* Theatre Award and an *Evening Standard* Theatre Award for his portrayal of Basil Anthony in the [West End](/source/West_End_theatre) production of *[Man and Boy](/source/Man_and_Boy_(play))*[4]

His most recent film project is *Jump!* (2007), in which he starred as a young Jewish photographer charged with the murder of his father, based on the real-life story of [Philippe Halsman](/source/Philippe_Halsman), opposite [Patrick Swayze](/source/Patrick_Swayze) and [Martine McCutcheon](/source/Martine_McCutcheon).

## Law career

Silverstone left Cambridge in 2001 with a [first](/source/British_undergraduate_degree_classification) class [degree](/source/Academic_degree). He was [called to the bar](/source/Called_to_the_bar) in 2009.[5] As of December 2023, Silverstone works at [Matrix Chambers](/source/Matrix_Chambers).[5] That firm lists him as a specialist in media and information, data protection and public law.[6]

In May 2025, Silverstone asked the High Court to dismiss a lawsuit by an Afghan man against *[The Guardian](/source/The_Guardian)* and [Guardian Media Group](/source/Guardian_Media_Group), who accused the newspaper of using his image to illustrate a note about the [murder of Hamed Sabouri](/source/Murder_of_Hamed_Sabouri) in Afghanistan. Silverstone said that the article was not defamatory and did not harm the man's reputation.[7]
