**Ben Faerie** was a Thoroughbred stallion who had a great influence on [eventing](/source/Eventing) horses in [Great Britain](/source/Great_Britain). His descendants include [Virginia Leng's](/source/Virginia_Leng) mounts [Priceless](/source/Priceless_(horse)) and [Nightcap](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Nightcap_(horse)&action=edit&redlink=1), and [Pippa Funnell's](/source/Pippa_Funnell) mounts [Primmore's Pride](/source/Primmore's_Pride) and [Walk on Star](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Walk_on_Star&action=edit&redlink=1). He stood 15.3[hh](/source/Hand_(unit)) (160 cm).

Ben Faerie was bought as a two-year-old at the Ascot sales by Diana Scott, for £250. It was originally intended to use him as a stud for producing [fox hunters](/source/Fox_hunting) out of half-bred [mares](/source/Mare). He began breeding as a three-year-old, and produced over 800 offspring. The first were used in the hunt field, until [Virginia Leng](/source/Virginia_Leng) had amazing success with two Ben Faerie sons: [Priceless](/source/Priceless_(horse)) and [Night Cap](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Night_Cap_(horse)&action=edit&redlink=1). These sons gave him a name as an [eventing](/source/Eventing) sire.

Ben Faerie had the ability to pass on not only speed, but courage, good jumping ability and a wonderful temperament. Seventeen years after his death he was still rated the fifth best event sire of all time.[1] In 1998, 1% of all horses in Britain were by the great stallion.
