**Benjamin Semple Chase III** (March 18, 1923 – March 6, 1998) was an American professional [football](/source/American_football) [guard](/source/Guard_(gridiron_football)) who played one season with the [Detroit Lions](/source/Detroit_Lions) of the [National Football League](/source/National_Football_League) (NFL). He played [college football](/source/College_football) at the [United States Naval Academy](/source/United_States_Naval_Academy).

## Early life

Benjamin Semple Chase III was born on March 18, 1923, in [Bisbee, Arizona](/source/Bisbee%2C_Arizona).[1] He attended [Herbert Hoover High School](/source/Hoover_High_School_(San_Diego%2C_California)) in [San Diego, California](/source/San_Diego%2C_California).[1]

## College career

Chase played [college football](/source/College_football) for the [Navy Midshipmen](/source/Navy_Midshipmen_football) of the [United States Naval Academy](/source/United_States_Naval_Academy) and was a three-year [letterman](/source/Letterman_(sports)) from 1942 to 1944.[1] He was a consensus [All-American](/source/College_Football_All-America_Team) in [1944](/source/1944_college_football_season).[2][3] Despite this, he was only named second-team All-Eastern by the [Associated Press](/source/Associated_Press) in 1944.[4] He served in the [United States Navy](/source/United_States_Navy) after his college career.[1] He played for the [1945 Little Creek Amphibs football team](/source/1945_Little_Creek_Amphibs_football_team).

## Professional career

Chase signed with the [Los Angeles Rams](/source/Los_Angeles_Rams) of the [National Football League](/source/National_Football_League) in 1947 but was later waived.[5]

He was claimed off waivers by the [Detroit Lions](/source/Detroit_Lions) on September 24, 1947.[5] He played in 11 games for the Lions during the 1947 season, recording two fumble recoveries.[6]

## Personal life

Chase died on March 6, 1998, in [Poway, California](/source/Poway%2C_California).[1]
