**Belzan** is a [casual](/source/Casual_dining) [fine dining](/source/Fine_dining) [bistro](/source/Bistro) on [Smithdown Road](/source/Smithdown_Road) in [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool), England. Opened in 2017, it has been named one of the best restaurants in the UK by *[The Good Food Guide](/source/The_Good_Food_Guide)* and featured in the *[Michelin Guide](/source/Michelin_Guide)*.

## History

Belzan was opened in 2017 by friends Chris Edwards, Owain Williams, and Sam Grainger. Williams had previously worked at Liverpool's [Hope Street Hotel](/source/Hope_Street_Hotel).[1] Grainger is also executive chef and has been a contestant on *[Great British Menu](/source/Great_British_Menu)*.[2]

## Description

Belzan is a modern [bistro](/source/Bistro).[3] The *[Michelin Guide](/source/Michelin_Guide)* commented on its "cosy" interior and "unassuming location", while both *[The Guardian](/source/The_Guardian)* and [Lonely Planet](/source/Lonely_Planet) described its style as relaxed but sometimes challenging.[4][5]

Talking to [BBC Radio Merseyside](/source/BBC_Radio_Merseyside), Grainger described the restaurant's cuisine as [fine dining](/source/Fine_dining) with seasonal British produce. He tries to cook with ingredients from within 30 miles of the restaurant as much as possible, such as using pumpkins from a customer's local [allotment](/source/Allotment_(gardening)) and wild garlic from [Sefton Park](/source/Sefton_Park).[1][6][7]

The restaurant's signature dish is a serving of [Anna potatoes](/source/Pommes_Anna) baked with a [Guinness](/source/Guinness) [rarebit](/source/Welsh_rarebit) top and served with a Bois Boudran-style sauce of tomato, tarragon, and vinegar.[6] *The Guardian* writer [Grace Dent](/source/Grace_Dent) notably said that the highlight of her visit was being served [rice pudding](/source/Rice_pudding) flavoured with [tonka beans](/source/Dipteryx_odorata), which are banned in the United States due to being fatal in large doses.[4]

## Reception

Belzan has been named as one of 100 best local restaurants in the UK by *[The Good Food Guide](/source/The_Good_Food_Guide)*. In 2023, it was featured in the *[Michelin Guide](/source/Michelin_Guide)*.[1][6][8] It has also been noted as one of Liverpool's best restaurants by *The Guardian*, [*Conde Nast Traveller*](/source/Cond%C3%A9_Nast_Traveller), [*Time Out*](/source/Time_Out_(magazine)), and *[BBC Good Food](/source/BBC_Good_Food)*.[7][9][10] *Delicious* magazine listed it as one of the best restaurants in the country for solo dining.[11]

## In popular culture

In May 2023, American actor and comedian [Will Ferrell](/source/Will_Ferrell) made headlines when he dined at Belzan whilst in Liverpool to attend the [Eurovision Song Contest](/source/Eurovision_Song_Contest_2023).[6] In May 2024, [*Lord of the Rings*](/source/The_Lord_of_the_Rings_(film_series)) actors [Billy Boyd](/source/Billy_Boyd), [Orlando Bloom](/source/Orlando_Bloom), [Dominic Monaghan](/source/Dominic_Monaghan), and [Elijah Wood](/source/Elijah_Wood) ate at the restaurant during a stay in Liverpool for [Comic Con](/source/Comic_Con_Liverpool), with Grainger calling them "really great, nice guys who had an amazing laugh [and] nearly ate the whole menu".[12]
