The **Bellevue Mosque** (Swedish: *Bellevuemoskén*) is a mosque in [Gothenburg](/source/Gothenburg), Sweden. It is located at Generalsgatan 2A in the "[Bellevue](/source/Bellevue,_Gothenburg)" district of Gothenburg. The mosque is administered by the [Somali](/source/Somali_people)-dominated[1] **Islamic Sunni Centre Denomination** (Swedish: *Islamiska Sunnicentret Trossamfund*, *ISC*) and advocates the [Salafi](/source/Salafism) movement of Islam.[2][3] It was created with funds from [Saudi Arabia](/source/Saudi_Arabia).[4]

The mosque has been in the focus of media several times for its alleged ties to various [Islamist](/source/Islamism) and [terrorist](/source/Islamic_terrorism)-designated organizations.[5] According to an article in *[Göteborgs-Tidningen](/source/G%C3%B6teborgs-Tidningen)*, [Mirsad Bektašević](/source/Mirsad_Bekta%C5%A1evi%C4%87), the Swedish citizen of [Bosniak](/source/Bosniaks) descent who was convicted on terrorism-related charges in [Sarajevo](/source/Sarajevo) in 2007, was a frequent attendee of the Bellevue Mosque.[6] In the same article it was further claimed that the mosque had financial ties to the [al-Haramain Foundation](/source/Al-Haramain_Foundation),[6] a [Saudi](/source/Saudi_Arabia)-based charity group which has been listed on the [United Nations](/source/United_Nations_Security_Council_Committee_1267) list of "entities belonging to or associated with [al-Qaeda](/source/Al-Qaeda)". Representatives from the foundation are also said to have visited the mosque at several occasions.[6]

In December 2006 it was reported that the mosque has been used to collect money for the [Islamic Courts Union](/source/Islamic_Courts_Union) (ICU) in [Somalia](/source/Somalia).[7]

In July 2009 it was reported that [Xasan Xuseen](/source/Xasan_Xuseen), described as [spiritual leader](/source/Spiritual_leader) of the Somali Islamist group [al-Shabaab](/source/Al-Shabaab_(Somalia)), had been invited to speak at a conference at the mosque.[2] al-Shabaab has carried out several [suicide attacks](/source/Suicide_attack) in Somalia and is [designated](/source/U.S._State_Department_list_of_Foreign_Terrorist_Organizations) as a [terrorist organization](/source/Terrorist_organization) by the [United States Department of State](/source/United_States_Department_of_State).[8] It is also described, although not officially designated, as a terrorist organization by the [Swedish Security Service](/source/Swedish_Security_Service) among others.[2][9]

In November 2012, the mosque held the first public dawah course in the Swedish language, it was arranged by controversial British Islamic missionary group [iERA](/source/IERA) and [Sveriges Förenade Muslimer](#SFM).[10] According to the [Swedish Defence University](/source/Swedish_Defence_University), nearly all individuals who have travelled from Gothenburg to join [jihadi](/source/Jihadism) groups in Syria have been visitors to the mosque.[10] The official web page of the mosque praise [Sharia law](/source/Sharia_law) as "just and merciful towards society as a whole".[10]

## Organisations

A number of organisations are active at the mosque.

### Mångkulturella Ungdoms Center

Mångkulturella Ungdoms Center (translation: "[multicultural](/source/Multiculturalism) youth centre" is the youth section of the mosque. It was formed in 2004[10] and is a member in the umbrella organisation [Muslim Youth of Sweden](/source/Sveriges_Unga_Muslimer). On 11 September 2011 its chairman was among those arrested on suspicion of an attack against artist [Lars Vilks](/source/Lars_Vilks), who had an exhibition at art gallery *Röda Sten* in Gothenburg. During the criminal investigation, police found propaganda for violent jihadism on a computer in their office with pictures named [Al-Shabaab](/source/Al-Shabaab_(militant_group)) and [mujahideen](/source/Mujahideen).[11] The trial concluded there many indications to support the prosecutor's charge of attempted murder of Vilks, but the court only upheld the charge of carrying knives in a public space.[11]

### Sveriges Förenade Muslimer

*Sveriges Förenade Muslimer* (translation: "United Muslims of Sweden") was formed in 2011. They organised an annual conference with about 1000 visitors.[12] The organisation has received funding from [Gothenburg Municipality](/source/Gothenburg_Municipality) and [state aid](/source/Subsidy) from the [Swedish Agency for Youth and Civil Society](/source/Swedish_Agency_for_Youth_and_Civil_Society). According to an investigation by *[Uppdrag granskning](/source/Uppdrag_granskning)*, the organisation has invited a number of preachers who sympathise with the [Islamic State](/source/Islamic_State) of Iraq and the Levant and [al-Qaeda](/source/Al-Qaeda).[13]
