# Beit Oved

**Beit Oved** (Hebrew: בֵּית עוֹבֵד or 'House of [Obed](/source/Obed_(biblical_figure))') is a [moshav](/source/Moshav) in central [Israel](/source/Israel). Located on the outskirts of [Ness Ziona](/source/Ness_Ziona), it falls under the jurisdiction of [Gan Raveh Regional Council](/source/Gan_Raveh_Regional_Council). In its population was .

## Etymology

The name is based on one of two [biblical](/source/Bible) passages: And the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-[edom](/source/Edom) in his house three months; and the LORD blessed the *house of Obed*-[edom](/source/Edom), and all that he had. (1 [Chronicles](/source/Book_of_Chronicles) 13:14)[1] or: He that *tilleth* his ground shall have plenty of bread; but he that followeth after vain things is void of understanding. ([Proverbs](/source/Book_of_Proverbs) 12:11)[2]

## History

The moshav was founded in 1933 by a group of veteran farmers,[3] as part of the [Settlement of the Thousand](/source/Settlement_of_the_Thousand) plan, a response to the [1929 Palestine riots](/source/1929_Palestine_riots) in which small farm settlements were built on the outskirts of Jewish towns and [moshavot](/source/Moshava) to improve security.[4] A grove of oak trees was planted on the hilltop adjacent to the synagogue and community center to commemorate people from the region who died during the [1936–1939 Arab revolt](/source/1936%E2%80%931939_Arab_revolt_in_Palestine).[5]
