**Behm Canal** is a natural [channel](/source/Channel_(geography)) in the [Alexander Archipelago](/source/Alexander_Archipelago), in the [southeastern part](/source/Alaska_Panhandle) of the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Alaska](/source/Alaska).

About 108 miles (174 km) long, Behm Canal separates [Revillagigedo Island](/source/Revillagigedo_Island) from the mainland. From the [Clarence Strait](/source/Clarence_Strait), Behm Canal extends north and northeast, through the Behm Narrows and by the mouth of the [Unuk River](/source/Unuk_River), then south to [Revillagigedo Channel](/source/Revillagigedo_Channel).[1]

The Behm Canal was charted and named by [George Vancouver](/source/George_Vancouver) in 1793, in honor of [Magnus von Behm](/source/Magnus_von_Behm), who was the governor of [Kamchatka](/source/Kamchatka_Peninsula) in 1779 when [Captain James Cook's](/source/James_Cook) ships, with Vancouver among the crew, arrived at [Petropavlovsk](/source/Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky) shortly after Cook was killed in [Hawaii](/source/Hawaii). It was Behm who carried the news of Cook's death to [Europe](/source/Europe).[1][2]

The canal is used by the Southeast Alaska Acoustic Measurement Facility (SEAFAC) as an acoustic testing site for [United States Navy](/source/United_States_Navy) submarines.[3]

[New Eddystone Rock](/source/New_Eddystone_Rock) is a craggy, much-photographed basalt island in Behm Canal.
