# Bea Palya

**Bea Palya** (Hungarian pronunciation: [pɒjɒ bɛ.ɒ]; born **Beáta Palya;** in [Makó](/source/Mak%C3%B3), 11 November 1976) is a Hungarian [folk](/source/Folk_music) and [world music](/source/World_music) singer and songwriter, sometimes appearing in films as an actress or singer.

In her early years she was influenced by Hungarian folk songs, Bulgarian, Jewish and Gypsy music, following her multiple ethnic roots.[1]

Side by side with her musical career, she developed a career in the film industry. She sang the title song for the Hungarian film *[Portugal](/source/Portugal_(film))* (2000). As an amateur actress, Palya appeared in a supporting role in [Miklós Jancsó](/source/Mikl%C3%B3s_Jancs%C3%B3)'s *[A mohácsi vész](/source/A_moh%C3%A1csi_v%C3%A9sz_(film))* (2004). She played a more important role in French film *[Transylvania](/source/Transylvania_(film))* (2006), and sang in *[Kolorado Kids](/source/Kolorado_Kids_(film))* (2010).[2] In 2017, she made her feature film debut with a leading role in [Étienne Comar](/source/%C3%89tienne_Comar)'s biographical film, *[Django](/source/Django_(2017_film))* (2017) as the gypsy wife of the title character, guitarist [Django Reinhardt](/source/Django_Reinhardt).[3]

## Background

She grew up in the Hungarian village [Bag](/source/Bag,_Hungary), where she danced and sang in the local dance-group. She continued her education in Budapest at [Apáczai Csere János Gimnázium](/source/Ap%C3%A1czai_Csere_J%C3%A1nos_Gimn%C3%A1zium), than studied [ethnography](/source/Ethnography) at [Eötvös Loránd University](/source/E%C3%B6tv%C3%B6s_Lor%C3%A1nd_University). She graduated in 2002.[1][citation needed]

Initially, she sang in the Hungarian folk music groups [Zurgó](/source/Zurg%C3%B3) and [Laokoón](/source/Laoko%C3%B3n) and began her solo career in 2002. She performs Hungarian and Bulgarian folk music as well as [jazz](/source/Jazz) and [world music](/source/World_music). She also studied both Indian and Persian music.[4]
