The **Battle of Modlin** took place during the 1939 German [invasion of Poland](/source/Invasion_of_Poland) at the beginning of the [Second World War](/source/World_War_II). [Modlin Fortress](/source/Modlin_Fortress) was initially the [headquarters](/source/Headquarters) of the [Modlin Army](/source/Modlin_Army) until its retreat eastwards. From 13 to 29 September 1939, it served as a defensive citadel for Polish forces under the command of [General](/source/General) [Wiktor Thommée](/source/Wiktor_Thomm%C3%A9e) against assaulting [German](/source/Nazi_Germany) units. The fighting was closely linked with the strategic situation of the [Battle of Warsaw](/source/Siege_of_Warsaw_(1939)).

The Polish forces defending the [fortress](/source/Fortress) included the [armoured train](/source/Armoured_train) *Śmierć* ("death") and the Modlin [anti-aircraft](/source/Anti-aircraft) battery, which was credited with shooting down more *[Luftwaffe](/source/Luftwaffe)* planes than any other in the entire September campaign.

Fortress Modlin [capitulated](/source/Capitulation_(surrender)) on 29 September, one of the last to lay down its arms in the campaign, and surrendered 24,000 troops.[1]: 78 Several days earlier, [Rochus Misch](/source/Rochus_Misch) had attempted to negotiate the surrender of the fortress and was shot and badly wounded while returning from the negotiations, for which he was awarded the [Iron Cross](/source/Iron_Cross).[2]

Soldiers of the [Panzer Division Kempf](/source/Panzer_Division_Kempf) committed the [Massacre in Zakroczym](/source/Massacre_in_Zakroczym) on 28 September 1939.
