The genus used to be [classified](/source/classification_(biology)) in the [family](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) Tulostomaceae<ref name="Cannon 2007"/> until [molecular phylogenetics](/source/molecular_phylogenetics) revealed its affinity to the [Agaricaceae](/source/Agaricaceae). Species of ''Battarrea'' have a [peridium](/source/peridium) ([spore](/source/spore) sac) that rests atop an elongated, hollow [stipe](/source/stipe_(mycology)) with a surface that tends to become torn into fibrous scales. Inside the peridium, the [gleba](/source/gleba) consists of spherical, warted spores, and a [capillitium](/source/capillitia) of simple or branched [hypha](/source/hypha)l threads that have spiral or angular thickenings. The genus is named after Italian priest and mycologist [Giovanni Antonio Battarra](/source/Giovanni_Antonio_Battarra).<ref name="Rea 1922"/>
