Bassecourt is first mentioned in 1160 as ''Baressicort''.  In 1184 it was first mentioned by its German name, ''Altdorf''.  The [hamlet](/source/hamlet_(place)) of Berlincourt was first mentioned in 1303 as ''Burlincort''.<ref name=HDS/>

Bassecourt had an area of {{Swiss area|6701|mi=on}}.{{Swiss area data|6701|QUELLE}}  Of this area, {{convert|5.84|km2|mi2|abbr=on}} or 37.5% is used for agricultural purposes, while {{convert|7.77|km2|mi2|abbr=on}} or 49.9% is forested. Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 7.1% and transportation infrastructure made up 3.3%.  Out of the forested land, 47.8% of the total land area is heavily forested and 2.1% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees.  Of the agricultural land, 18.6% is used for growing crops and  11.5% is pastures and 6.9% is used for alpine pastures.  All the water in the municipality is flowing water.<ref name=BFS_land/>

The former municipality is located in the Delemont district, along the Sorne river in the Delemont valley.  It lies at the intersection of the [Delémont](/source/Del%C3%A9mont)-[La Chaux-de-Fonds](/source/La_Chaux-de-Fonds) and the [Porrentruy](/source/Porrentruy)-[Biel/Bienne](/source/Biel%2FBienne) roads.  It consists of the village of Bassecourt and the [hamlet](/source/hamlet_(place)) of Berlincourt.

In the [2007 federal election](/source/2007_Swiss_federal_election) the most popular party was the [SPS](/source/Social_Democratic_Party_of_Switzerland) which received 30.11% of the vote.  The next three most popular parties were the [CVP](/source/Christian_Democratic_People's_Party_of_Switzerland) (25.86%), the [CSP](/source/Christian_Social_Party_(Switzerland)) (19.24%) and the [SVP](/source/Swiss_People's_Party) (14.76%). In Bassecourt about 1,132 or (34.5%) of the population have completed non-mandatory [upper secondary education](/source/Education_in_Switzerland), and 259 or (7.9%) have completed additional higher education (either [university](/source/List_of_universities_in_Switzerland) or a ''[Fachhochschule](/source/Fachhochschule)''). The Canton of Jura school system provides two year of non-obligatory [Kindergarten](/source/Kindergarten), followed by six years of Primary school.  This is followed by three years of obligatory lower Secondary school where the students are separated according to ability and aptitude.
