Educated at Maidstone Technical High School for Boys (now [Oakwood Park Grammar School](/source/Oakwood_Park_Grammar_School)), he studied geography at Plymouth Polytechnic (now the [University of Plymouth](/source/University_of_Plymouth)), and obtained his Ph.D. in geography from the [University of Southampton](/source/University_of_Southampton) in 1981.
