The '''Basento''' (Latin ''Casuentus'') is a river in the [Basilicata](/source/Basilicata) region of [southern Italy](/source/southern_Italy).<ref>{{cite book |title=The Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World |edition=13 |year=2011 |publisher=Times Books |location=London |isbn=9780007419135 |page=78 L3}}</ref> It rises at Monte Arioso in the [southern Apennine Mountains](/source/Apennine_Mountains), southwest of [Potenza](/source/Potenza) in the [province of Potenza](/source/province_of_Potenza). The river flows northeast near [Pignola](/source/Pignola) and Potenza before curving east near [Vaglio Basilicata](/source/Vaglio_Basilicata). It curves southeast and flows near [Brindisi Montagna](/source/Brindisi_Montagna), [Trivigno](/source/Trivigno), and [Albano di Lucania](/source/Albano_di_Lucania). A right tributary coming from Lago di Ponte Fontanelle flows into the river in this area. The river forms the border between the province of Potenza and the [province of Matera](/source/province_of_Matera) for a short distance before flowing into the province of Matera. It flows eastward near [Tricarico](/source/Tricarico), [Calciano](/source/Calciano), and [Grassano](/source/Grassano) before curving southeast. The river flows near [Grottole](/source/Grottole), [Miglionico](/source/Miglionico), [Pomarico](/source/Pomarico), [Ferrandina](/source/Ferrandina), and Monte Finese before curving eastward. It flows near [Pisticci](/source/Pisticci) and [Bernalda](/source/Bernalda) before flowing into the [Gulf of Taranto](/source/Gulf_of_Taranto), which is part of the [Ionian Sea](/source/Ionian_Sea), near [Metaponto](/source/Metaponto). The main city on the Basento is [Potenza](/source/Potenza), the capital of [Basilicata](/source/Basilicata).
