**Baruch** ([Hebrew](/source/Hebrew_language): בָּרוּךְ, [Modern](/source/Modern_Hebrew): *Barūḵ*, [Tiberian](/source/Tiberian_vocalization): *Bārūḵ*, "Blessed", [Polish](/source/Polish_language): [Berek](/source/Berek_(disambiguation))) is a masculine name among [Jews](/source/Jew) used from [Biblical times](/source/Biblical_times) to the present, which is sometimes used as surname.[1] It is also found, though more rarely, among Christians—particularly among [Protestants](/source/Protestant) who use [Old Testament](/source/Old_Testament) names.

Except for its use as a name, this is also related to *[berakhah](/source/Berakhah)* or *bracha* (Hebrew: **ברכה**; plural ברכות, *berakhot*), which is a Jewish [blessing](/source/Blessing). See also: *[Baraka](/source/Barakah)* and *[Barakah](/source/Barakah)*.

The root [B-R-K](/source/B-R-K) meaning "blessing" is also present in other [Semitic languages](/source/Semitic_languages). The most common [Arabic](/source/Arabic_language) form is the passive form [Mubarak](/source/Mubarak_(name)), but the form [Barak](/source/Barak_(name)) ([Barack](/source/Barack_(name))) is also used. In Polish it is [Berek](/source/Berek_(disambiguation)).

[Benedictus](/source/Benedictus_(given_name)) is a [Latin](/source/Latin) name with similar meaning; cf. [Baruch Spinoza](/source/Baruch_Spinoza) or Benedictus de Spinoza.
