[51°13′16″N 1°45′50″W / 51.221°N 1.764°W / 51.221; -1.764](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Barrow_Clump&params=51.221_N_1.764_W_type:landmark_region:GB-WIL) **Barrow Clump** is an [archaeological site](/source/Archaeological_site) in [Figheldean](/source/Figheldean) parish, Wiltshire, England, about 3+1⁄2 miles (5.6 km) north of the town of [Amesbury](/source/Amesbury). The site is a [scheduled monument](/source/Scheduled_monument).

## Description

Barrow Clump lies on the northwestern slope of rising ground about 700 metres east of the village of [Ablington](/source/Ablington%2C_Wiltshire), in [Figheldean](/source/Figheldean) parish.[1]

The surviving part of the monument is a [bowl barrow](/source/Bowl_barrow) about 30 metres in diameter. Other barrows in the same group have been lost to ploughing.[2] The barrow was constructed in the early [Bronze Age](/source/Bronze_Age_Britain) on the site of a [Neolithic](/source/Neolithic_Europe) settlement, and much later, around the 6th century, it was re-used as an [Anglo-Saxon](/source/Saxon_England) cemetery.[3]

The site was designated as a scheduled monument in 1990.[2]

## Investigation

Partial [excavations](/source/Excavation_(archaeology)) were carried out in the 19th century,[2] in the early 20th century by Lt Col [William Hawley](/source/William_Hawley), and in 2003–2004 by [English Heritage](/source/English_Heritage).[3]

Permission was granted for full excavation in 2012–2014 in order to record the site, which was being extensively damaged by [badgers](/source/Badger). The project was organised by the [Defence Infrastructure Organisation](/source/Defence_Infrastructure_Organisation), English Heritage and [Wessex Archaeology](/source/Wessex_Archaeology), and was carried out by soldiers from [The Rifles](/source/The_Rifles) infantry regiment and participants in [Operation Nightingale](/source/Operation_Nightingale_(archaeology)).[4] Many Bronze Age items were found, with a smaller quantity from the Neolithic period. Many Saxon graves were uncovered, together with items including a bucket-shaped drinking vessel, made from pieces of yew wood bound together with bronze.[3][5] Finds are held by the [Wiltshire Museum](/source/Wiltshire_Museum) at Devizes.[6]
