It was created in 1876 for the [Conservative](/source/Conservative_Party_(UK)) politician [John Ormsby-Gore](/source/John_Ormsby-Gore%2C_1st_Baron_Harlech), with remainder to his younger brother William. He had previously represented [Carnarvon](/source/Carnarvon_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) and [North Shropshire](/source/North_Shropshire_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) in the [House of Commons](/source/British_House_of_Commons). Ormsby-Gore was the eldest son of [William Ormsby-Gore](/source/William_Ormsby-Gore_(1779%E2%80%931860)), [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament) for [County Leitrim](/source/County_Leitrim_(UK_Parliament_constituency)), [Carnarvon](/source/Carnarvon_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) and [North Shropshire](/source/North_Shropshire_(UK_Parliament_constituency)), and the great-great-great-grandson of William Gore, third and youngest son of [Sir Arthur Gore, 1st Baronet, of Newtown](/source/Sir_Arthur_Gore%2C_1st_Baronet), second son of [Sir Paul Gore, 1st Baronet, of Magharabag](/source/Sir_Paul_Gore%2C_1st_Baronet), whose eldest son Paul was the grandfather of [Arthur Gore, 1st Earl of Arran](/source/Arthur_Gore%2C_1st_Earl_of_Arran). Lord Harlech was succeeded according to the special remainder by his brother William, the second Baron. He was a former Conservative Member of Parliament for [County Sligo](/source/County_Sligo_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) and County Leitrim and also served as [Lord Lieutenant of County Leitrim](/source/Lord_Lieutenant_of_County_Leitrim) for many years. His son, the third Baron, represented [Oswestry](/source/Oswestry_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) in the House of Commons as a Conservative between the May 1901 - June 1904.
