'''Baron Audley''' is a title in the [Peerage of England](/source/Peerage_of_England) first created in 1313, by [writ](/source/Hereditary_peer) to the [Parliament of England](/source/Parliament_of_England), for Sir Nicholas Audley of [Heighley Castle](/source/Heighley_Castle), a member of the English [Audley family](/source/Audley-Stanley_family) of [Staffordshire](/source/Staffordshire).

The third Baron, the last of the senior Audley line, died without issue in 1391, when the [baron](/source/baron)y fell into [abeyance](/source/abeyance); it was revived in 1408 for the descendants of his sister Joanne Audley, and her husband, [Sir John Tuchet, <small>KG</small>](/source/John_Tuchet%2C_4th_Baron_Audley) (b. 1327); the '''11th Baron Audley''' was created [Earl of Castlehaven](/source/Earl_of_Castlehaven) and his son, [the 2nd Earl](/source/Mervyn_Tuchet%2C_2nd_Earl_of_Castlehaven), was [attainted](/source/attainted) of felony and executed, forfeiting the ancient [English barony](/source/baron) but not the [Irish earldom](/source/Irish_earldom). (The Castlehavens also held two other different baronies Audley of Orier (1616) and Audley of Hely (1633).) The [titles](/source/hereditary_title) were revived by Act of Parliament in 1678 for his son, [James Tuchet, 3rd Earl of Castlehaven](/source/James_Tuchet%2C_3rd_Earl_of_Castlehaven), devolving in the same line until the death of [John Tuchet, 8th Earl of Castlehaven](/source/John_Tuchet%2C_8th_Earl_of_Castlehaven) in 1777, when the earldom became extinct, and the Audley title passed to [George Thicknesse-Tuchet](/source/George_Thicknesse%2C_19th_Baron_Audley) as the '''19th Baron Audley'''. The title has been abeyant since the death of Richard Souter, 25th Baron Audley in 1997, leaving three daughters.<ref>{{cite book|title=Debrett's Peerage & Baronetage|date=2008|publisher=Debrett's|page=79}}</ref>

The title of '''Baron Audley''' was created a second time on 20 November 1317, again by [writ of summons](/source/Hereditary_peer), in favour of Sir Hugh Audley of [Stratton Audley](/source/Stratton_Audley), grandson of James Audley of Audley (1220–1272). He married [Lady Margaret de Clare](/source/Margaret_de_Clare), daughter of the [Gilbert, Earl of Hertford and Gloucester](/source/Gilbert_de_Clare%2C_7th_Earl_of_Gloucester) (of 1218 creation, extinct 1314)). Audley was created [Earl of Gloucester](/source/Earl_of_Gloucester) in 1337, but upon his death in 1347, the earldom became extinct and the barony fell dormant. His only daughter and heir married [Ralph Stafford, 1st Earl of Stafford](/source/Ralph_Stafford%2C_1st_Earl_of_Stafford), thus ''de jure'' the barony devolved with the [earldom of Stafford](/source/Earl_of_Stafford) until 1521 when [Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham](/source/Edward_Stafford%2C_3rd_Duke_of_Buckingham) was [attainted](/source/attainder) of his [noble title](/source/noble_title)s.
