The species was formally described in 1859 by Victorian Government Botanist [Ferdinand von Mueller](/source/Ferdinand_von_Mueller). Mueller's description was based on plant material collected by the superintendent of the [Brisbane Botanic Gardens](/source/City_Botanic_Gardens), [Walter Hill](/source/Walter_Hill_(garden_curator)), in the vicinity of [Pine River](/source/Pine_River_(Queensland)) to the north of [Brisbane](/source/Brisbane).<ref name=APNI/>
