**Barisal-5** is a constituency represented in the [Jatiya Sangsad](/source/Jatiya_Sangsad) (National Parliament) of [Bangladesh](/source/Bangladesh). [Mazibur Rahman Sarwar](/source/Mazibur_Rahman_Sarwar) is the incumbent member of Parliament from this constituency.

## Boundaries

The constituency encompasses [Barisal City Corporation](/source/Barisal_City_Corporation) and [Barisal Sadar Upazila](/source/Barisal_Sadar_Upazila).[1][2]

## History

The constituency was created for the first general elections in newly independent Bangladesh, held in 1973.

[Shawkat Hossain Hiron](/source/Shawkat_Hossain_Hiron) died in April 2014.[9] Jebunnesa Afroz, his widow, was elected in a June 2014 by-election.[10]

Shawkat Hossain Hiron, of the Awami League, was elected unopposed in the [2014 general election](/source/2014_Bangladeshi_general_election) after opposition parties withdrew their candidacies in a boycott of the election.[11]

Nasim Biswas died in March 1998.[15] Majibur Rahman Sarwar, of the BNP, was elected in a mid-1998 by-election.[16][17]

In October 1991, Abdur Rahman Biswas became President of Bangladesh, vacating his parliamentary seat.[18] M. R. Sarwar was elected in a December 1991 by-election.[19]
