**Baring Bay** is an [Arctic](/source/Arctic) waterway in the [Qikiqtaaluk Region](/source/Qikiqtaaluk_Region), [Nunavut](/source/Nunavut), Canada. It lies off the southwestern coast of [Devon Island](/source/Devon_Island) in the eastern high Arctic. Like [Macormick Bay](/source/Macormick_Bay) to the south, it is an arm of [Wellington Channel](/source/Wellington_Channel).

It was named in 1850–1852 in honour of Sir [Francis Thornhill Baring](/source/Francis_Baring%2C_1st_Baron_Northbrook) (1796–1866), then [First Lord of the Admiralty](/source/First_Lord_of_the_Admiralty), along with Baring Strait (now [Northumberland Sound](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Northumberland_Sound&action=edit&redlink=1)), Baring Land and Baring Island (now [Banks Island](/source/Banks_Island)).[2] [Baring Cape](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Baring_Cape&action=edit&redlink=1) (the northwest point of [Victoria Island](/source/Victoria_Island)) and [Baring Channel](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Baring_Channel&action=edit&redlink=1) (between the islands of [Russell](/source/Russell_Island_(Nunavut)) and [Prince of Wales](/source/Prince_of_Wales_Island_(Nunavut))) were also named in his honour, but later.

## History

In August 1852, Baring Bay was the starting point of an expedition headed by Dr. [Robert McCormick](/source/Robert_McCormick_(explorer)) in search for Sir [John Franklin](/source/John_Franklin) and his [missing expedition](/source/Franklin's_lost_expedition).[3]
