==Early life==
She was born Barbara Freiinger, in [Klagenfurt](/source/Klagenfurt), Austria. From 1957 to 1962, she studied chemistry at the [University of Vienna](/source/University_of_Vienna) and then worked at the [Max Planck Institute](/source/Max_Planck_Institute) for Virus Research at the [University of Tübingen](/source/University_of_T%C3%BCbingen), where she received her doctorate in 1967.<ref name="FMI_emeriti">{{Cite web |title=Barbara Hohn|url=http://www.fmi.ch/about/people/emeriti/emeriti.html?group=14 |work=FMI|date=2013 |access-date=19 October 2013}}</ref> Her PhD thesis supervisor was Professor Friedrich Freksa.<ref name=AcademiaNet />

==Career==
As a postdoc, she did research at the Universities of Yale and Stanford, and in 1971 at the Biozentrum, [University of Basel](/source/University_of_Basel). In 1978, she became a group leader at the [Friedrich Miescher Institute](/source/Friedrich_Miescher_Institute). From 1989, Hohn was associate professor of molecular genetics and in 1996 adjunct professor at the [University of Basel](/source/University_of_Basel). She retired in 2004. Her research topics included the ''[Agrobacterium tumefaciens](/source/Agrobacterium_tumefaciens)''.<ref name="FMI_emeriti" />

Hohn is a member of the [Austrian Academy of Sciences](/source/Austrian_Academy_of_Sciences) (Math and Science class) and the [Royal Society](/source/Royal_Society).
