Hanawalt was born in [New Brunswick](/source/New_Brunswick%2C_New_Jersey), [New Jersey](/source/New_Jersey). Her father was a university professor and her mother was a schoolteacher.{{cn|date=August 2022}}

== Career ==

Hanawalt received her bachelor's degree from Douglass College in 1963, a master's degree from the [University of Michigan](/source/University_of_Michigan) in 1964, and a Ph.D., also from the University of Michigan, in 1970.{{cn|date=August 2022}}

Hanawalt taught for a number of years at [Indiana University](/source/Indiana_University) and the [University of Minnesota](/source/University_of_Minnesota).
