**Barbara Beckett** (born March 1952) is a former international [badminton](/source/Badminton) player from Northern Ireland who competed at two [Commonwealth Games](/source/Commonwealth_Games) and was a 19-times champion of Ireland.

## Biography

Beckett won her first titles in 1973 at both the [Irish Championships](/source/Irish_National_Badminton_Championships) and the [Irish Open](/source/Irish_Open_(badminton)). In the same year she also won at [Welsh International](/source/Welsh_International).

Beckett represented the [Northern Irish team](/source/Northern_Ireland_at_the_1974_British_Commonwealth_Games)[2] at the [1974 British Commonwealth Games](/source/1974_British_Commonwealth_Games) in [Christchurch](/source/Christchurch), New Zealand,[3] where she competed in the [singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles events](/source/Badminton_at_the_1974_British_Commonwealth_Games).[4]

Four years later she represented the [Northern Irish team](/source/Northern_Ireland_at_the_1978_Commonwealth_Games) again at the [1978 Commonwealth Games](/source/1978_Commonwealth_Games) in [Edmonton](/source/Edmonton), Canada,[5] where she competed in [four events](/source/Badminton_at_the_1978_Commonwealth_Games).[6]

In 1980 after earning 52 international caps she pulled out of the Irish team in order to seek a place in the English rankings.[1] She was living in Birmingham for several years.[7]

In 1980 she was first at the [Scottish Open](/source/Scottish_Open_(badminton)). In total, she won 19 national titles.[8][9]

She was coached by [Winston Wilkinson](/source/Winston_Wilkinson_(badminton)).[10]
