It was founded in 1933 as Banco Nacional Hipotecario Urbano y de Obras Públicas, S.A (National Urban Mortgage and Public Works Bank) by president [Abelardo L. Rodríguez](/source/Abelardo_L._Rodr%C3%ADguez).
