'''''Bankera''''' is a [genus](/source/genus) of four species of [tooth fungi](/source/hydnoid_fungi) in the [family](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) [Bankeraceae](/source/Bankeraceae). The genus was first [circumscribed](/source/circumscription_(taxonomy)) in 1951 by [William Chambers Coker](/source/William_Chambers_Coker) and [Alma Holland Beers](/source/Alma_Holland_Beers),<ref name="Coker 1951"/> but this publication was [invalid](/source/valid_name_(botany)) according to the [rules of botanical nomenclature](/source/International_Code_of_Nomenclature_for_algae%2C_fungi%2C_and_plants). It was later published validly by [Zdeněk Pouzar](/source/Zden%C4%9Bk_Pouzar) in 1955.<ref name="Pouzar 1955"/> The [type species](/source/type_species) is ''[B. fuligineoalba](/source/Bankera_fuligineoalba)''. The genus is [ectomycorrhiza](/source/ectomycorrhiza)l with [gymnosperm](/source/gymnosperm)s, usually with trees from the [pine family](/source/pine_family).<ref name="Stalpers 1993"/>

[Fruitbodies](/source/Basidiocarp) of ''Bankera'' species are fleshy, usually with a centrally-placed [stipe](/source/stipe_(mycology)), and greyish-brown spines on the [hymenial](/source/hymenium) undersurface. The texture of the [flesh](/source/trama_(mycology)) ranges from soft to tough, but it lacks the zones associated with some other Bankeraceae genera. Dried flesh often has a [fenugreek](/source/fenugreek) odor. [Spores](/source/Basidiospore) range in shape from more or less spherical to [ellipsoid](/source/ellipsoid), and are [hyaline](/source/hyaline) (translucent), with thin walls. [In deposit](/source/Spore_print), they are white. ''Bankera'' has a monomitic [hypha](/source/hypha)l system with brownish to hyaline, inflated generative hyphae.<ref name="Stalpers 1993"/>

In 2013, based on [molecular](/source/molecular_phylogenetics) and [morphological](/source/morphology_(biology)) evidence, Richard Baird proposed that the type species ''Bankera fuligineoalba'' be transferred into the genus ''[Phellodon](/source/Phellodon)'', as ''Phellodon fuligineoalbus''.<ref name="Baird 2013"/>
