**Bang Lamphu**, also spelled **Banglampoo** or **Banglamphu** ([Thai](/source/Thai_language): **บางลำพู**, pronounced [\[bāːŋ lām.pʰūː\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Thai); in the past, it was often misspelled **บางลำภู**)[1] is a neighbourhood in [Bangkok](/source/Bangkok) located in [Phra Nakhon District](/source/Phra_Nakhon_District). The history of the Bang Lamphu community dates to the establishment of the [Rattanakosin Kingdom](/source/Rattanakosin_Kingdom), or earlier. Bang Lamphu covers the area north of Phra Nakhon, both inside and outside [Rattanakosin Island](/source/Rattanakosin_Island), stretching from [Phra Athit](/source/Phra_Athit_Road) to [Samsen Roads](/source/Samsen_Road), which lead toward [Dusit District](/source/Dusit_District). Most of Bang Lamphu lies within [Talat Yot Subdistrict](/source/Talat_Yot_Subdistrict), with parts extending into nearby subdistricts such as [Chana Songkhram](/source/Chana_Songkhram_Subdistrict), [Bowon Niwet](/source/Bowon_Niwet_Subdistrict), [Ban Phan Thom](/source/Ban_Phan_Thom), and up to [Wat Sam Phraya](/source/Wat_Sam_Phraya_subdistrict).

## History

The name "Bang Lamphu" can mean *"area of mangrove apple"* (*lamphu* is Thai for mangrove apple). [Mangrove apples](/source/Mangrove_apple) (*[Sonneratia caseolaris](/source/Sonneratia_caseolaris)*) once flourished [along waterways](/source/Chao_Phraya_freshwater_swamp_forests) in the area, including the [Khlong Bang Lamphu](/source/Khlong_Bang_Lamphu) and [Chao Phraya River](/source/Chao_Phraya_River). There are no more mangrove apple trees in the local [Santi Chai Prakan Park](/source/Santi_Chai_Prakan_Park), since the last one died in 2012 from the [2011 Thailand floods](/source/2011_Thailand_floods), but the name Bang Lamphu is still commonly used to describe the area.[2][3]

Bang Lamphu became a community prior to the Rattanakosin period. It was the residence of royalty, courtiers, vassals[4] and citizens of many ethnic groups, including [Thai](/source/Thai_people), [Chinese](/source/Overseas_Chinese), [Mon](/source/Mon_people) and [Muslims](/source/Muslims) who settled in the vicinity.[5][6] Once the Khlong Rop Krung canal was excavated, a pier was established at Bang Lamphu[7] by which goods such as vegetables and fruits could be transported from the [Thonburi](/source/Thonburi) side. In those days, Bang Lamphu resembled a lively [floating market](/source/Floating_market), bustling with activity. The renowned poet [Sunthorn Phu](/source/Sunthorn_Phu) described the area in his work *[Nirat](/source/Nirat) Phukhao Thong*, written during his journey to pay homage to the [Chedi Phukhao Thong](/source/Chedi_Phukhao_Thong) (Golden Mount) in [Ayutthaya](/source/Ayutthaya_province), as he passed through Bang Lamphu by boat:

Bang Lamphu also became a major market for overland trade via the [Khaosan Road](/source/Khaosan_Road)[9] and a number of other roads.

The community was home to [likay](/source/Likay) dancers and [Thai musicians](/source/Music_of_Thailand) and was the birthplace of [Montri Tramote](/source/Montri_Tramote), a Thai musician recognized as "master of Thai classical music" and [National Artist of Performing arts (Thai music)](/source/National_Artist_(Thailand)).[8]

Bang Lamphu has become a popular [tourist destination](/source/Tourist_destination), especially for [Westerners](/source/Westerners). The Khaosan and [Rambuttri](/source/Rambuttri) Roads feature tourist attractions. Accommodations and dining are available including [guest houses](/source/Guest_houses), [hostels](/source/Hostels), [restaurants](/source/Restaurants), [street food](/source/Street_food_of_Thailand), bars, [cafés](/source/Caf%C3%A9s), [clothes](/source/Clothes), and [travel agencies](/source/Travel_agencies) including [Thai massage](/source/Thai_massage) services.[10] For Thai people, Bang Lamphu is also considered to be a hub for notable [school uniform](/source/School_uniforms_in_Thailand) stores.[11][12]

Bang Lamphu, especially [Sip Sam Hang Road](/source/Sip_Sam_Hang_Road), the area opposite [Wat Bowonniwet Vihara](/source/Wat_Bowonniwet_Vihara) was considered a center of teenagers in the 1950s–60s, like [Wang Burapha](/source/Wang_Burapha). Since it was home to many restaurants including cafés and ice cream parlours that offered jukeboxes and televisions, which were rare appliances in those days. Hence, Bang Lamphu and Sip Sam Hang Road were cited in the 1997 [Thai](/source/Thai_film) [heroic bloodshed](/source/Heroic_bloodshed) film *[Dang Bireley's and Young Gangsters](/source/Dang_Bireley's_and_Young_Gangsters)* as a backdrop for the characters in street gang battles.[13]
