'''Balvanyos''' ([Hungarian](/source/Hungarian_language): ''Bálványos'') is a spa resort in [Covasna County](/source/Covasna_County), in the east of [Transylvania](/source/Transylvania), central [Romania](/source/Romania). It lies at an altitude 840–950 m on the southern slopes of the Bodoc Mountains, some 67 km from [Sfântu Gheorghe](/source/Sf%C3%A2ntu_Gheorghe), the county's seat. The spa is located close to the ruins of the 11th century [Balvanyos Citadel](/source/B%C3%A1lv%C3%A1nyos_Castle) ({{langx|ro|Cetatea Balvanyos}}, {{langx|hu|Bálványosvár}}).

The spa is one of several [hydrothermal](/source/hydrothermal) and [volcanic](/source/volcanic) features of the region. It lies 10 km from the [Lake Sfânta Ana](/source/Lake_Sf%C3%A2nta_Ana), which is unique in this part of Europe. A geological feature locally known as "The Birds' Cemetery" – precipice with [hydrogen sulphide](/source/hydrogen_sulphide) emanation – is also located nearby.<ref>{{Cite web|url = http://www.infoghidromania.com/balvanyos.html|title = Statiunea Baile Balvanyos|date = |accessdate = |website = InfoGhidRomania.com|publisher = |last = |first = |language = Romanian}}</ref>

The spa has been known for its health properties for centuries, but has only been commercially exploited as a spa since the building in 1938 of Grand Hotel Balvanyos, a 4 star hotel.<ref>{{Cite web|url = http://www.hotelbalvanyos.ro/|title = Despre noi|date = |accessdate = |website = Grand Hotel Balvanyos|publisher = |last = |first = |language = Romanian|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20150514215750/http://www.hotelbalvanyos.ro/|archive-date = 2015-05-14|url-status = dead}}</ref>
