'''Baltimore Chrome Works''' was a [chromium](/source/chromium) ore refinery with its headquarters and main factory located at [Fells Point, Baltimore](/source/Fells_Point%2C_Baltimore), USA. [Isaac Tyson](/source/Isaac_Tyson) started mining [chromite](/source/chromite) in the area around [Baltimore](/source/Baltimore) in 1813 and built the Baltimore Chrome Works at Fells Point in 1845. The works became part of Mutual Chemical Company in 1908, and merged into [Allied Chemical](/source/Allied_Chemical_%26_Dye_Company) in 1954.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://magazine.jhsph.edu/2007/fall/features/swann_park/ |title=Arsenic in Swann Park: How a beloved South Baltimore greenspace became one of America's 450,000 brownfields |last=Edelson |first=Mat |date=Fall 2007 |website=Johns Hopkins Public Health (magazine) |publisher=Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health |location=Baltimore}}</ref><ref name=MDE>Maryland Department of the Environment, Baltimore, MD (2004-10-05).[http://msa.maryland.gov/megafile/msa/speccol/sc5300/sc5339/000113/001000/001786/unrestricted/20061271e.pdf "Allied Chemical Corporation (known as Honeywell, Inc.), Baltimore, Maryland."] Waste Management Administration; Environmental Restoration & Redevelopment Program.</ref> The plant, which was rebuilt in 1951, employed 375 people at peak production.<ref name=Kelly>{{cite news |last=Kelly |first=Jacques |date=1992-12-02 |title=Harbor factory's demise erases hazard and charm |newspaper=Baltimore Sun}}</ref>

The factory at Fells Point operated until 1985, when it was closed down. The company had contaminated the {{convert|20|acre|m2}} site with [hazardous waste](/source/hazardous_waste), and [Honeywell](/source/Honeywell), the successor to Allied Chemical, was ordered by the [Environmental Protection Agency](/source/United_States_Environmental_Protection_Agency) to perform a cleanup in the 1986. The order was confirmed by a judicial [consent decree](/source/consent_decree) in 1989.<ref name=MDE/> Honeywell completed the remediation in 1999.<ref name=Honeywell>{{cite web |url=http://baltimorechromiumresiduecleanup.com/history/ |title=Baltimore Chromium Residue Cleanup: History |author=<!--Staff writer(s); no by-line.--> |publisher=Honeywell International, Inc. |access-date=2015-02-14}}</ref><ref>{{cite book | url = https://books.google.com/books?id=sUaeX3f4fLgC&pg=PA42|title = Fell's Point |first = Jacqueline |last = Greff |publisher = Arcadia Publishing |year = 2005 |isbn = 978-0-7385-1845-9 |page =42}}</ref><!--{{doi|10.1016/j.apgeochem.2004.03.005}} http://www.epa.gov/reg3wcmd/ca/md/pdf/mdd069396711.pdf http://www.mde.state.md.us/assets/document/brownfields/AlliedChemHoneywell.pdf-->
