# Balliales

**Balliales** is an order of [red algae](/source/Red_algae) belonging to the class [Florideophyceae](/source/Florideophyceae). The order consists only one family, **Balliaceae**.[2] with only one genus - **Ballia** Harvey.[3]

The genus of *Balliales* was [circumscribed](/source/Circumscription_(taxonomy)) by [William Henry Harvey](/source/William_Henry_Harvey) in J. Bot. (Hooker) vol.2 on page 191 in 1840.

The genus name of *Balliales* is in honour of [Anne Elizabeth Ball](/source/Anne_Elizabeth_Ball) (1808–1872), who was an Irish botanist, amateur [algologist](/source/Phycology), and botanical illustrator.[4]
