The ridge is situated {{convert|7|km|abbr=on}} northeast of [Mount Kliment Ohridski](/source/Mount_Kliment_Ohridski), extending {{convert|4.5|km|abbr=on}} in the north-south direction, {{convert|1.45|km|abbr=on}} wide, and is bounded by Poste Valley to the east, by [Palestrina Glacier](/source/Palestrina_Glacier) to the north and its tributary [Yozola Glacier](/source/Yozola_Glacier) to the west.

Balan Ridge is named for the Bulgarian [linguist](/source/linguist), historian and [bibliographer](/source/bibliographer) [Aleksandar Teodorov-Balan](/source/Aleksandar_Teodorov-Balan) (1859–1959), first [rector](/source/Rector_(academia)) of [Sofia University](/source/Sofia_University) and one of the founders of the [tourist movement](/source/tourism) in Bulgaria.
